On first glance, this photograph seems so simple. So basic. And yet I find it's the simplicity that truly makes it stand out to me in the end.
It's true perhaps that there is nothing that seems particularly grandiose; a single subject in a black and white photograph. Yet the way the artist shot this single subject really makes it stand out. The gull is looking straight into the camera (or at least seems to be). As though it is communicating directly with us, the audience. Trying to tell us something. And I personally feel deeply moved when I see this.
Plus I love how the body of the gull is clearly rotating around its head as it soars into the sky. This really gives a feel for the physical strength and beauty of the bird.
Beyond the subject itself, the framing of the photo is beautifully done. There is nothing in the background to distract me from the outstretched wings of the bird. And while perhaps in any other photograph having over two thirds of the background as nothing but a sea of gray and black would seem muted and boring, in this instance I feel it supports the subject perfectly.
The main reason I'm generally not drawn to B&W photography is because it seems to dull the overall effect and impact of the art. But in this instance the artist made a great choice by removing all color. It really draws attention to the white colors of the bird.
If I'm honest, I'm not usually a fan of black and white photography, but this shot really captured me when I came across it.
What's great about this photo is that it's not complicated. It's just a seagull against a plain backdrop. I love how the gull is positioned in the frame, the effective focus, the contrast between white and black and the lovely curves; they appear stronger due to the shot being in black and white. All those things create such a beautiful simplicity.
I also like how you caught the gull looking right in the direction of the camera; its gaze so piercing and strong. It adds a little more intensity to the shot.

Overall this is a wonderful piece. Great job!

Really good work on this!
